Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba Promoted to the Rank of Minister

Yousef Al Otaiba (, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to the United States, has been promoted to the rank of Minister by the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Minister Yousef Al Otaiba has been the UAE Ambassador to the US since 2008. In his announcement, the President cited the UAE Ambassador’s many years of loyal service to the UAE, and his role in strengthening the ties between the two nations.

Minister Yousef Al Otaiba has worked to improve UAE-US relations in numerous areas, including:

Economic: Bilateral trade between the nations has increased 70% during his tenure as Ambassador. The UAE’s investments in the US have increased, and US cultural institutions including New York University, the Guggenheim Museum, Johns Hopkins University, and the Cleveland Clinic have opened new branches in the UAE. The UAE is the US’s largest trading partner of all Middle East countries.

Strategic: Military, counterterrorism, and intelligence cooperation between the UAE and the US has increased. In 2009, the two nations came together on the US-UAE Agreement for Peaceful Civilian Nuclear Energy Cooperation.

Philanthropic: During Minister Al Otaiba time as Ambassador, the Government of Abu Dhabi (the capital of the UAE) established the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, the UAE Embassy has built soccer fields in poor communities in the US, and the UAE Embassy has provided emergency relief in the US after natural disasters including hurricanes and tornados, such as assistance to New Jersey and New York after Hurricane Sandy.

Minister Yousef Al Otaiba graduated from Cairo American College and earned a degree in international relations from Georgetown University. Prior to becoming an Ambassador, he spent many years gaining valuable experience in the fields of diplomacy, security, and anti-terrorism, including serving as the Director of International Affairs for His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces for eight years.
